Welcome to PDX Dönerländ. So here you are on our website wondering who we are and what’s our story. Thanks for asking, glad you’re here 🙂
It is all about you, Portland and Döner Kebab. In that order. We are here for you!
Our mission is to serve you some amazing food that some of you may have had before while traveling Europe. Or any other country in the world. Or you have had it at one of the rare food carts in the US that serve them. Most of the cart owners are either from Germany or have lived in Germany at some point.
There are many stories where Döner Kebab came from and who came up with it. First, let me explain what it is. It’s a sandwich. No forks, no knives, no plates.
(Ingredients: Flat bread filled with beef & lamb (stacked and roasted on a vertical spit, then thinly shaved), lettuce, onions, tomatoes, cabbage and yogurt sauce. Spices.)
It is said that Turkish immigrants who came to Germany in the 60s, brought their food culture with them, adding German ingredients -like cabbage- and soon later, the Döner Kebab sandwich was born (they say Kadir Nurman gets the credit to be the inventor in 1972, Berlin). Today, Döner Kebab is the most popular street food in Germany and made its way all around the globe. But the US market is almost untouched -still- until now…
I like this following article about Döner Kebab on Wall Street Journal (picture is from Wall Street Journal showing German chancellor Merkel slicing Döner):
And here we are, bringing you this delicious sandwich, that you will never get enough of, I promise. And I know, I am from Germany and crave it every day. More to come in my next post about who we are and how we got here.
